Jin Niu Lake is seated in the north east of Luhe District which is 50 kilometers away from Nan Jing city. It is the boundary lake of three cities between Jiangsu province and Anhui province. The famous historic Yangzhou city is on its east side and the city of Anhui is on its north side. It is convenient to go have a visit thanks to metro line S8.

Jin Niu Lake which was constructed in 1958 and covers an area of 25000 mu (≈16km²) is the biggest man-made lake in Nanjing. It is fed mainly from surface water and rainfall through the catchment area of 124.14 km², and it has a volume of nearly 100 million m³s. The good ecological quality of water resources has kept Jin Niu Lake up to the standard of Class II Surface Water. Moreover, multiple types of aquatic products raised in the lake are entirely natural and the lake is recognized as an organic aquaculture base by the government.

Jin Niu Lake was named after the east-west Jin Niu Mountain which are said to look like a lying bull, enjoying the landscape when observed from afar. The mountain is of 196m in height and 96% covered by 5000 mu (3≈km²) of forest. The content of negative oxygen ions is 4000/cm³,100 times that of most cities, earning the Jin Niu mountain the fame of a “Natural Oxygen Bar”. The forest is made up by organic breeds like pine, metasequoia and broad-leaved species like Chinese toon, wingceltis and red maple as well as large-planted wild bamboo. Many kinds of wild animals like pheasant, hare, weasel, owl and fowls like sparrow, egret, and grey swan regard this area as their home.Jin Niu Mountain is bustling with lively animals aside the limpid lake. It is said that the founder of the Ming dynasty, Yuanzhang Zhu, had once grazed for his uncle here and left several stories about this place. Jin Guang Temple which is still standing was built during 1573-1619 BC and has now become a famous attraction for tourists to pray for blessings.

“Where can I find the trail of beautiful flower Mo-Li? A poet pointed me to Jin Niu Lake (Mo Li Fang Zong He Chu Xun, Ci Ren Yao Zhi Jin Niu Hu)” is the famous line of the classic Jiangsu ballad Flower Mo-Li. This charming ballad was re-composed from The Song of Flower by Fang He (who was 14 years-old back then and enrolled in the New Fourth Army) 15 years after visiting Nanjing in 1942.

As a scenic area, these spots are supplied for free: Fishing Hall (Yu Qu Guan), Bird Park (Bai Niao Yuan),Aquarium (Hai Yang Guan) and Lover’s Rock (Qing Ren Shi), Stone Carp (Li Yu Shang Shan), Golden Turtle Rock (Jin Gui Tan Hai) and Fairy Cave (Xian Ren Dong). New entertainment projects, Jungle Trekking and Glass Water Slide were commissioned in 2018. A mini mobile program on WeChat is also used to help tourists get free explanation and navigation to have a more convenient tour.

With the success of the Sino-America Star Waterski games in 2011, National Sailing Championship (OP) in 2012, Sailing Championship of Youth Olympic Games in 2014, Chinese Dragon Boat Races in 2017 and 2018 and some Luhe thematic championships promoted the tourism of Jin Niu Lake. It was rated as National Water Park, National 4A tourist attraction, main scenic spot of National Geopark, Provincial tourism resort, Provincial forest park step by step.

Jin Niu Lake scenic area has seized the opportunity created by the development of the light rail systems and the development of Jiangbei District to promote the cooperative development of the service and resort industries. Meanwhile, it relies on the principle of Environment First to exploit forest and water resource to introduce the ideas of health maintenance, exercise, fitness and teaching the life concept of “Ecology, Culture, Leisure, Health”.
